HAVE AN IDEA BEFORE YOU BUY:
Before you choose a pup it is best to know what expectations you have for your adopted family member.
Just as two people can have 5 children together and all with different personalities drives and builds dogs are the same. While a litter share the same gene pool characteristics are not set in stone and it is common to get multiple personalities in the one litter. It is important to realise when choosing a pup that its good looks only get it so far. If there are specific things in mind you want this pup to achieve things like colour should be low on your list of priorities and temperament and structure the main concern.
This is a list of things you should consider before choosing a pup.
- Are you after a family pet to raise with children?
This is an important thing to consider because you don’t want a puppy that is very excitable and high energy around your children if you are not prepared to lay strict rules for your new pup. This breed is renowned for how good it is with children but common sense must prevail. You want a calm lay back pup with a nice happy disposition. You will also have to lay ground rules for your children regarding behaviour around and towards the pup. I will be putting together a list of the do’s and do nots shortly.
- Are you after an agility dog or running companion?
Agility dogs are go go go dogs. Agility dogs should not be heavy set or bulky as a rule. You would be looking for a stronger leaner build and something not overly clumsy when playing with its litter mates. A pup that is always on the go will love this type of training and if the pup loves the training you know they will excel.
- Are you after a show dog?
A show dog obviously must fall well within the breed standard how ever some thing I have noticed is that the best example of the breed doesn’t always win the shows. The difference between a good show dog and a great one is the temperament. A dog that shows confidence in the ring is easy to pick as it walks with pride and its whole attitude screams “LOOK AT ME”. If you are after a show dog this is the personality you are after and it is able to be detected in a litter at a young age. As long as you nurture this trait you are in for some fun at the shows. - Do you want to breed your dog?
Too many people think that breeding is easy. They believe that as long as you have 2 dogs it’s an easy road.
Firstly you need pups from clean lines before you go any further. I don’t mean clean healthy parents only because just like humans dogs throw back into previous generations with their genetics. You also need a pup from a clean litter because if a substantial part of the litter has faults or genetic shortfalls even though the pup you choose may be great it still shares the genetics of it’s siblings and they will be evident in your pups progeny.
You need compatible lines as some lines when combined just make a mess.
You need to ensure that both parents have compatible structures.
Both parents must have nice even temperaments or you may have a litter of social outcasts.
These dogs are domestic pets and natural selection does not apply. It is your responsibility to ensure that each mating is well thought out and any dog that shows temperament flaws are not mated. If you are a true animal lover it will show in your mating selections.
Never buy a breeding dog if it is not a great example of the breed just because of its colour. You will just be adding to the sub standard mess already being mass produced.
